Guatemala 2 bedroom Villa-House for rent in Lake Atitlan Solola Department Western Highlands Guatemala

Description: Villa-House in Lake Atitlan

Orchids by the Lake - amazing views!

Nestled on the slopes of San Pedro Volcano and overlooking the two volcanoes (all inactive) and town of Santiago, is the acreage called Orchids on the Lake. It's the perfect quiet natural retreat and a very special place to experience the lake.
Secluded and yet close to civilization, the property is just a 5 minute boat ride across the picture perfect bay to Santiago and connecting boats to all other parts of the lake.
The main floor with the kitchen, dining area, living room, and bathroom offer great character with its volcanic stone walls and fireplace and wood re-appropriated from the old Guatemalan railway.
With its two spacious bedrooms and bathroom, the upstairs of the house offers simply incredible views. Its sunny 50' foot veranda makes for a nice place to tuck away with a book or just to enjoy the views across the lake.
The property is 100% off the grid (solar-powered), but in a way that you won't notice nor be inconvenienced. We just ask that you be mindful of your use of electricity and water to be eco friendly.
The kitchen is fully equipped and stocked with basics and there's a great market in Santiago for fresh fruit, produce, and all the necessities.
There are no restaurants or stores on this side of the bay - only gardens, a beautiful yard filled with flowers, lots and lots of birds including or resident hummingbirds and butterflies.
The on-site host couple will help you organize your sightseeing and any special interests you have. They will be on the property, but out of sight in a small cottage nearby and can give you complete privacy if you wish, or all the help you'd like.
After your days exploring on the lake, the property is the perfect place to come back to. Relax in a comfortable chair on the veranda and take in the breathtaking scenery.

avatar Perfect relaxing retreat with breathtaking volcano views

I stayed at Casa de Cynthia with 4 other 30-somethings and we had an absolutely amazing trip and would highly recommend it. The property is beautiful; lush hillside gardens with avocado trees and breathtaking views of two (dormant) volcanoes. It can only be reached by boat and it is extremely peaceful and serene. Watching the sunrise on the porch whilst drinking fresh Guatemalan coffee was enjoyed by all of us. There are two large bedrooms upstairs with a shared bathroom with a lovely hot shower. There's also another bathroom with a shower downstairs with a fantastic view! The living room has a comfy couch, futon and armchair and a great fireplace, which we lit every night (Cynthia's gardener makes sure there is plenty of fire wood always available). There is a tv and DVD player and a fantastic selection of movies. The kitchen has pretty much everything you could need and also spices, oil, tea etc. Cynthia makes sure there is always plenty of drinking water. The faucet water is safe for washing but not drinking. There are no laundry facilities but they're easily available in Santiago. Cynthia has two very friendly dogs (Lindy Lou and Shadow) who liked to hang out sometimes and Misha the cat, which made us miss our own pets less. They sleep with Cynthia in the casita, which is also on the property but tucked out of the way. Cynthia had a cell phone for us to borrow so we could call Diego to arrange water taxis or make any other reservations as needed. We topped it up with 50Q and it lasted our week's stay. There was also a SIM card or chip which could be used to access the internet but we didn't need it. Many bars and restaurants had wifi so we just reconnected with the world on our day trips. Our Spanish was pretty basic and Cynthia was always so helpful making calls for us when we were out of our depth. She also said to call her if we had any problems or couldn't understand someone and she would translate. We really enjoyed taking water taxis to different towns around the lake each day and Cynthia always had helpful recommendations and tips. She told us all the prices we should be paying for things, which is definitely needed to avoid being overcharged. Case de Cynthia is not the place for you if you can't navigate steps or if you like being in close proximity to restaurants, bars etc. but is was perfect for us. We all agreed it was lovely to come home and chill out after busy days bartering and exploring the hustle and bustle on the Lake and decided it was much much nicer than staying in a town. Cynthia was always quick to reply to any emails I sent and answered my many questions with her vast knowledge. She also kindly arranged for Aclash to pick us up from Guat City airport in his minivan for $100 each way (approx 3 hours in good weather), which made vacation planning very easy. Make sure you have food etc before you get dropped off at the dock as there isn't too much available down there. Cynthia was the perfect hostess and we felt it was like staying with a friend. She made herself always available to help but was never intrusive. She is a really nice lady and she made our trip extra special. It was an incredible vacation for us and cannot say enough positive things about our experience.

We spent 4 nights at Orchids and were awed by the view and the absolutely gorgeous house. Sitting on the balcony in the early morning watching the mist rise from above Santiago across the water and seeing the men standing in their dugout boats paddling their way to work, drinking Guatemalan coffee was the most relaxing peaceful time. The grounds are on several levels, displaying a variety of flowers with many orchids growing on the trees. The house is beautiful, very spacious, built and decorated with much thought. Views from every window are wonderful. I would love to visit again.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks at the Casa de Cynthia and indeed it has the most amazing views of the lake and volcanos. The climate was perfect and we really appreciated the peace and quiet in the elegant house and gardens. Our hosts, a Canadian couple, Ben and Lindsey with their fluent Spanish and local knowledge were invaluable. They made our vacation completely enjoyable and memorable.

We stayed at Cynthia's house for a week in October, 2013 and loved every minute of it. We were looking for place where we could lounge around in hammocks reading and having a nice glass of wine, so this place was idyllic. The house itself is gorgeous and spacious – the views from the walk-out verandas off the bedrooms are stunning. We'd been staying in some local-style places on our travels so it was really nice to spend some time at place with good hot showers and comfortable beds. The caretakers were friendly Canadians. Though onsite in their cottage, they made themselves and their dogs scarce, but were around when we needed. They were very helpful at giving us some info about the lake and their Spanish helped as they arranged some boats for us to go to San Pedro and a few other places. The place is pretty isolated with its own dock, but that's exactly what we were looking for. Note about noise – although across the bay from Santiago, we heard some music coming from the town in the evenings on the weekend. I guess the sound carries easily across the lake. But it was over by about 10pm so it didn't keep us up at night and we actually kind of liked listening to local music while sitting on the front porch in the evenings.

Ideal for a few days peace and tranquillity, this charming retreat is perfect as a getaway from the busy hustle and bustle of every day life, and the busy tourist trail. Convenient enough for local amenities but secluded enough for complete privacy. Host couple were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly, always available yet unobtrusive.

This house was so great. My sister and I (mid-50's) had my 6 year old here for a week and we all enjoyed it very much. Cynthia is great to deal with as are those she recommends such as the boat or taxi transportation people. The town directly across the lake, Santiago, is a great place to shop and eat. It seems to be the most traditional on the lake so note to dress properly. I made the mistake of showing a bit too much leg a few times and got "the look" of judgment. The prices in Santiago were much cheaper than Antigua so do as much shopping here as you can. The pictures really don't do it justice. It is a perfectly designed home that has everything needed for a lovely stay. An evening with a roaring fire and a good DVD could not be topped in this house!

We recently returned from a 5 night stay at this amazing property. Cynthia was the perfect host and made the task of organizing our transportation a breeze. Because the house can only be reached by boat she helped us arrange all of our water transportation from the moment we arrived until we left on the last day. About a hundred steps through an elaborate garden span the distance from the dock to the terrace upon which the house sits but this minor inconvenience is well rewarded with a feeling of privacy and security as well as breathtaking views of Lake Atitlan, Santiago, and the volcanoes beyond. The property is completely "off the grid" but you wouldn't know it because the solar power collected all day runs the house all the time. The whole area has an enchanted feel to it and if the views weren't enough the history of the area suggests that this area was in the middle of a thriving Mayan community centuries before. We enjoyed taking day trips to horse back ride, hike, zip-line, and shop but we mostly enjoyed hanging out on the large porch and watching the sun come up over the volcanoes or enjoying the warm tropical afternoon breezes as we watched the sun set. If you are looking for a great property off the beaten path, have no issue with steps, and enjoy natural beauty you will not be disappointed by this property!

On arrival in Santiago, met by a boat to take us across the lake to the house we rented for five nights. One hundred stone steps from the dock led to the home. Each step is anticipation of the extraordinary view. The owner, Cynthia, has gardens lining the walk and around her home. It was a paradise for the eyes. The steps had landings and switch backs inviting you to rest which I did that time with my bag and each time without baggage. The house has a perfect view of the lake, volcano, city of Santiago. Absolutely perfect with a deck on the lower and upper level for enjoying the view. Iron ornamental bars on the windows reminded us we are completely safe. Cynthia has a dog, Shadow who kept the grounds safe as well. The rule is after 5p.m. you stay at the house (no boats to cross the lake.) Perfect family vacation for visiting. We played games or watched a movie each night. New Years Eve was a highlight as we watched the amazing firework display from the second story deck.

Cynthia is an amazing woman. She had everything prepared for us. Even our transfers from Antigua to the Lake and in the morning when we had to go to the airport. She made our trip very enjoyable. Now the house.....oh my goodness. It was perfection. I don't even know any other word to describe it. The grounds were just flawless. All the beautiful flowers everywhere. The walk up to the house isn't the easiest, but it is absolutely gorgeous. If you stop to take a break all you see is flowers and the towering volcanoes in the distance. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. The boat ride to the town across the lake takes about 5 minutes. Everyone knows "Miss Cynthia" and her house. The sunsets in the afternoon to the sunrises in the morning. It was almost as if you could never take your eyes off the view. Thank you so much Cynthia for making our stay that much more incredible!! Give kisses to the animals for us! -Amanda, Josh and Lee Anne

Our host Cynthia lived on the property and was always available to help us with transportation arrangements since none of us speak very good Spanish. She gave us a phone to use while there and told us lots about the local customs, textiles, etc.The grounds were like a mini-botanical garden. The views of the lake and volcanos and the town across the lake were amazing. I hope we can return again!

This place is just amazing ! Quiet, only reachable by boat, surrounded by a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers and with stunning views of the lake and two volcanoes across it. This images will keep you in such a peaceful state of mind and will make it a perfect opportunity to re-assess your priorities, values and objectives. The house is so cozy and comfortable. Brig your wine and enjoy it from your room's balcony and/or in front of the fireplace ... All in all, 1000% recommended !!

avatar Quiet retreat on Lake Atitlan

If you're looking for a quiet retreat from the business of life, Cynthia's property is great. The house is beautiful and it's very easy to reach other parts of the lake by boat at very low cost. I believe Cynthia is in the process of having pumps installed for the pool next to the main house which will be a great addition since there are very few pools around the lake. Grab some local produce at the market in town and then enjoy your stay cooking, reading, swimming and relaxing in a garden paradise!
