avatar Awesome off the grid jungle experience!

What an amazing jungle experience at the Etho House! A group of 5 of us landed in Belize, rented an SUV, and made our way inland. You definitely need 4 wheel drive to get to their property. Not only a 4x4, but someone who knows how to drive in the rough terrain. Unfortunately we had no choice but to arrive in the evening. This made our initial journey to the property very difficult. We made a lot of wrong turns and everything looked the same! We were lucky enough to have international minutes and called Andrea when we had service to clarify directions. When we finally arrived (Forest had to meet us at the road leading to their property) it was pitch black out. The solar power wasn't working properly and we were prepared with head lamps just in case. I was expecting a run down cabin with spider webs and an out house. But I was VERY pleasantly surprised!!! Everything was so clean!!! Not a spider web or bug in the cabin lol. The beds were clean and there were books on the shelves. You can tell she really cares about her home. There is running water in the sinks and shower (no hot water but it's hot and humid in Belize anyways) and the toilets flush. She even has clean towels and soap in the bathroom for you! It just makes your stay much more bearable when you have certain amenities. This piece of property is completely immersed in the jungle. You fall asleep and wake up to noises of the jungle (eg, birds and even howler monkeys). They also have an awesome little swimming hole on the property. This place is VERY close to the ATM caves so I would recommended booking a tour there in advance during your stay. Andrea and Forest stay slightly up the road so if you need anything you can hike up but you still have a lot of privacy. They were wonderful hosts and we felt very welcome on their property. TIPS: - Bring head lamps and candles if you can (just in case) - Stop by a store to pick up goods before driving there. They have an ice chest in the kitchen if you need to use one. Bring ice... - Andrea's directions weren't the best (it seemed like everyone in Belize couldn't give specific directions) but if you are booking this place, here's my best advice/directions: drive inland towards the ATM caves. From Teakettle, there will be a large maroon sign for ATM leading you to a dirt road towards the cave. The property is about 7 miles from this point. Follow the small white signs for Pooks Hill lodge (there will be one towards the beginning of the dirt road that will have you take a sharp left). Stay right at the forks in the road. At the last Pooks Hill sign (the sign states "1 1/2 mi") you have to stay left. Once on this road, look out for a small bridge on the right hand side and turn right to cross it. It will be easier for Forest to meet you at the entrance of the property after this point. You have to drive up a bit but then the road forks again and the "pile of stone" she leaves out can be knocked down and hard to see. If you drive through a little creek (no bridge) AFTER you've gone over the first bridge (over a river), you've gone too far (only slightly, the road to their property is less than a mile back from the creek). I really hope this helps anyone. It will save you a headache getting there!
